Old and new Caules
:
Maximum duration:
It’s a very interesting route that will allow us to go across Serra de Caules and to link the old Caules Vell church with Santa Susanna hermitage, on top of the ridge.
We’ll cycle to Llagostera. From Sant Llorenç plain, we’ll climb to la Rovira to descend then to can Noguera mas. If we follow the course of the stream and then go up to a little hill, we’ll find the old Caules Vell village.
The village is a little jewel among the woods. We’ll find there the valuable pre-Romanesque church. It is made up by a nave and an apse that are arched, a graveyard next to the church with some anthropomorphic graves and the sites of the village houses, hidden among the bramble. The church, its main element, is damaged and needs desperately maintenance.
We’ll cross the remains of this village on foot and we’ll arrive at the end of an urbanisation. We’ll keep on climbing to Santa Susanna de Caules hermitage, from where we’ll enjoy a lovely view over the Montseny and La Selva plain.
The hermitage has a rectangular ground plan and a trapezoidal apse with pre-Romanesque distribution. It is dated from the 10th-11th centuries, but the front of the building has some modifications of the 20th century, such as the bell gable.
It was the parish of the masos in the surroundings until 1448. At present, it belongs to Vidreres.
We’ll keep on cycling to can Mundet; we’ll find soon the path to turn left to climb to Puig Ventós (peak of these mountains). We’ll come back to the main path and we’ll take immediately the path on the left, which goes down, following part of the Tossa pilgrims’ path, and which leads us again to can Noguera. We’ll go to Llagostera over the asphalt road, where we’ll take the green way to come back to Sant Feliu. This medieval village of Caules Vell is highly recommended. We hope that one day this spot will be well preserved to be fully proud of our countryside.
